BestGear.com

Behind the Brand

Why BestGear.com sits in the PremiumBrands collection, and what Newswire.com taught me about names.

I built PremiumBrands.com around one belief: a founder should be able to start under the name they would otherwise spend years working toward. The collection holds premium names, nearly all .com, and each one is shown with enough context, from a starter site to a few business directions, for a founder to picture the company on it. BestGear.com is one of those names, two plain words for a category that is all about choosing well, and it is the kind of name I want to see go to someone who will put it to work.

Lessons from Newswire.com

My own lesson in names came from running a business. In 2007 I acquired the press release distribution business running on i-Newswire.com. In 2013 I secured iNewswire.com, and in February 2015 we moved the business to Newswire.com, after more than a year of negotiating and after consulting SEO professionals first. Moving a running business to a new name touches everything it has already built, and I would rather a founder settled the name before there was that much to move.

The morning of the switch, a prospect told one of our sales agents, “Oh yeah, Newswire.com. I’ve heard of you guys.” That was impossible. It showed me how much a name does before anyone has read a word about the business behind it.

The test behind every name

I bought PremiumBrands.com before I had a plan for it. Premium names matter to me, and holding off would probably have meant losing it: by now it could belong to someone building on it, and then it would most likely not be for sale at all. The common advice runs the other way: settle for what is available and upgrade once the business has made it. I understand why founders hear it so often, and plenty have done well with ordinary names. In gear, that upgrade means new packaging, new signage, new email addresses and asking people to learn a second name, if the better one is still there to buy.

Before I buy any name, I ask one question: would I build on this? I buy as an end user, and the names I have not built on yet are the ones I am open to selling, which is how BestGear.com came to be offered here. What I like about it is the discipline it asks for. A business called BestGear has to say what each item is best for and show how it decided, and that is a good habit for a gear brand to have from its first week, whether it sells headlamps, reviews tents or rents out camping kits.

Where OnlineBusiness.com fits

OnlineBusiness.com, my strategy and development studio, supports the presentations for the PremiumBrands collection, this one included. That work is a steady reminder of how fast products can be made now. With AI tools, a capable founder can have a working shop or comparison site running in days, and a competitor can copy it nearly as quickly. A recognizable name is one of the few things that cannot be copied that way, which is why I would settle it before the first order rather than after.

If BestGear.com fits the gear business you are planning, tell me what you would sell, test or rent under it. If the name you want is a different one, tell me that too; I help founders acquire names that are not in the collection. The About This Domain page sets out what the purchase includes. A great name won’t save a bad business, and this one is a head start rather than the gear brand itself. A premium .com is a trust shortcut.

Start with the gear you know best

A first kit list, a first test or a first rental shelf is enough to start the conversation.
